TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s College of Continuing Studies is sponsoring the 16th annual Alabama Governor’s Safety and Health Conference Aug. 25-27 at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach. This year’s conference theme is “Safety and Health – A Value That Adds Value!”

Dr. William Weems, director of UA’s division of environmental and industrial programs, said the conference goal is to promote occupational safety and health in Alabama. The conference is the largest of its type in the Alabama and Gulf Coast region.

There will be general sessions on Monday and Wednesday mornings, along with technical breakout sessions Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday. General session speakers will address key issues affecting the work environment and provide pertinent information on current topics of interest. Breakout sessions will include topics covering a wide range of occupational safety, health and environmental subjects plus updates on regulatory matters.

A pre-conference will be held Thursday and Friday Aug. 21-22 at the Perdido Beach Resort. The registration fee for the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Safety and Health Outreach Program will be $25. Upon completion, attendees will receive the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry certification card.

People involved with safety and health programs in the workplace should attend the conference, including: safety and health professionals; plant superintendents; human resource managers; compliance managers; loss control specialists; building superintendents; safety training supervisors; state agencies; environmental professionals; occupational health nurses; case managers; and worker compensation managers. “The annual Alabama Governor’s Safety and Health Conference consistently provides quality technical information on issues that affect all safety and health professionals throughout the state,” said Scott Herndon, regional safety manager with Boral Industries in Bessemer.

“The networking opportunities have fostered the development of professional relationships that have served as key resources in compliance with, and in practical application of, standards,” said Herndon.

Conference registration price is $370 if received before the close of the day on Aug. 13. The fee will increase after that date.

The host hotel has limited meeting rooms, which determine the number of conference attendees that can be registered.
