TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University
of Alabama chapter of the Alabama Environmental Council (AEC)
started its weeklong campus recycling drive today in front of Morgan
Hall on the UA campus. The AEC will collect recyclables from students
each day through Friday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The project is one that the AEC sponsors each semester.
Members of the council anticipate a productive drive this semester
with the introduction of the Student Government Association’s
24 tri-bins for recycling across campus.
The recycling drive is a part of the AEC’s effort to increase
recycling on campus as well as in the community.
“In the past, the purpose of recycling week was to give
people an opportunity to recycle the material they had saved,”
said Tabetha Reyes, AEC secretary. “Now, Tuscaloosa as a city
has more places to drop off recyclables, but still has nowhere to
drop off glass.”
Because no designated area exists where glass can be taken, the
group will collect glass from recyclers and take it to Birmingham.
All types of paper, cardboard, plastics and other materials can
also be given to the AEC.
Information on how to recycle and where recyclables can be taken
in Tuscaloosa will be provided on site.
