TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama department of telecommunications
and film, along with the UA department of women’s studies,
the Student Executive Council and University Programs, will present
the Madcat Women’s International Film Festival Sunday, March
9, at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater.
Madcat is an international film festival that showcases films directed
or written by women.
Ariella Ben-Dov, curator for the Madcat International Film Festival,
has grouped several short films from her annual screening in San
Francisco into a program called “Truth Seekers.”
Truth Seekers, which will be shown at UA, is a series of seven
short documentaries that “search for understanding.”
The shorts include pieces about war, violence and community problems.
The 90-minute program will be followed by a short question and
answer period with Ben-Dov.
The festival is a part of Madcat’s tour of colleges and universities
around the country. Being Madcat’s first trip to the University,
Aaron Greer, UA assistant professor of telecommunication and film,
said he is hopeful that the event will encourage more female students
to become filmmakers.
Greer said that bringing the festival to the University would also
expose students and the University community to cultural and intellectual
activities they may not find elsewhere.
