TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Sarah
Moody Gallery of Art on The University of Alabama campus welcomes
Global Matrix: An International Print Exhibition, which will open
with a reception on Friday, Sept. 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the
gallery. The exhibition will be on display from Sept. 12 - Oct.
12.
Global Matrix features fine art printmaking from around the world
and is a contemporary review of printmaking that showcases a variety
of techniques. Seventy-eight works from 67 artists who represent
19 different countries will be on display. Included are works by
Richard Ash, Miguel Escobedo, Karen Kunc and Ellen Jean Price.
Global Matrix is a joint project and traveling exhibition of the
Purdue University Galleries and the Wright State University Art
Galleries in Dayton, Ohio.
Printmaking offers an ever-innovative approach to art making,
although its origins date back to prehistory, when “ancient
humans pressed pigmented hands on cave walls,” said Kathryn
Reeves, professor of art at Purdue University, in her exhibition
article “Spinning the Matrix.”
Reeves also commented on the international scope of the exhibit.
“I imagined prints from around the world we would be privileged
to see, prints once engaged in a private dance with the artist –
lifted, rolled, smoothed, pressed tightly – now moved into
a public sphere.”
The University community is represented in the exhibition by Sarah
Marshall, assistant professor of printmaking in UA’s department
of art. Marshall will conduct a gallery walk-through on Sept. 19
at 6 p.m. Members of the UA community are encouraged to attend.
Funding support for the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art comes from the
College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Alabama. Gallery
hours are 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 p.m.
until 5 p.m. Sunday. For further information, contact the gallery
at 205/348-1891.
