TUSCALOOSA, Ala.--The University of Alabama National Society of Collegiate Scholars
will host the 2nd Annual Great Alabama Reading Race on Saturday, April 24, beginning
at 9 a.m. with check-in starting at 8 a.m. in front of Morgan Hall.
Registration forms can be obtained at the Office of the Dean of Students in 231 Ferguson
Center, or participants can register on race day. The individual entry fee is $10 which
includes a T-shirt and the group entry fee for groups of 10 or more is $8. T-shirts
are limited so early registration is advised.
Prizes will also be provided for early registration as well as top winners, and all
participants will have an opportunity to win door prizes throughout the day as well.
Runners, walkers, wheelchair athletes, and dogs are all encouraged to participate.
The goal of The Great Alabama Reading Race is to raise money to purchase summer reading
books for students in grades K-8 attending school in the Tuscaloosa community in need
of these books. Some of the profits will also go toward reading programs throughout
the city. Last year the National Society of Collegiate Scholars was able to purchase
more than 500 books for the students at Westlawn Middle School. The group hopes by
purchasing exciting and interesting books for these students, they can inspire them
to get excited about reading.
For more information about the race please contact Grace Shelby, executive vice president
for the UA National Society of Collegiate Scholars,
