TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Alabama will host the annual Relay for Life
fund-raiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society on Friday, April 16, beginning
at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at the UA quad.
Relay for Life is the largest cancer fund-raiser in the nation, and was held in more
than 3,300 communities nationwide last year. Relay for Life has recently created a
Web site, www.cancer.org/relayonline,
that allows registering for teams, accepts donations and provides information about
this year’s Relay. During the event, team members take turns walking and camping
out over night.
“We’re excited about bringing the power of the Internet to our Relay
for Life event,” said Jessica Bradford, online chair for the event. “This
Web site will make it easier for teams to participate, raise funds and stay connected
with our event.”
During this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life, participants will
have the opportunity to remember loved ones and honor those that are battling cancer
with a special luminary ceremony that will take place on Friday, April 16,
at 10 p.m. on the UA quad.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life began in 1985, and remains a celebration
of survivorship and remembrance that raises funds and awareness of the fight against
cancer. This ceremony of light symbolizes the hope and courage with which we continue
to work toward a cure for this deadly disease. The luminaries are decorated with the
names of those who have battled cancer and remain lighted throughout the night to remind
everyone of the importance of their contributions.
Each luminary represents the love that families and friends have for a survivor who
has won the battle against cancer or for the memory of someone who lost the fight.
Hundreds of these luminaries will light up the Quad during this special ceremony.
Luminaries can be purchased before the event by calling 205/758-0700, or at the event.
