TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Alabama Women’s
Resource Center is hosting a number of events this month. All of the events are
free and open to the public; they include:
- April 19-30, Wounded Heart, a survivor art exhibit that offers
visual testimony to the impact of violence in our lives, will be on display in Burke
Hall. Survivors and those who work with survivors use wooden hearts as vehicles of
expression and healing.
- Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20-21,
Sexual Harassment, Assault & Rape Prevention training (SHARP self-defense)
class will be offered to all females from 12:30-5 p.m. The course is free, but participants
may choose to purchase the SHARP self-defense manual for $10. The training is a combination
of discussion on psychological risk-reduction strategies of self-defense followed
by basic physical techniques. The class is limited to 40 participants. Moderate physical
exercise is involved, so wear comfortable clothing. Participants are required to
attend all sessions to receive a certificate of training.
- Thursday, April 22, “Voices Against Violence”
Open Microphone Night at Bad Ass Coffee. This event is in conjunction with
Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and is designed to create a forum of expression for
anyone who would like to speak out about violence against women or the violence that
exists in our world today. VAV will be held at 7 p.m. and is not limited to music
and speech, it is a venue seeking to highlight various forms of creativity.
