TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Courtney Sanders, a University of Alabama student from Corner,
has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the spring semester
to study in Egypt at the American University in Cairo.
Gilman Scholars are selected by the Institute of International Education through
the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State.
Selection is based on the student’s academic performance, statement of purpose,
follow-up on the project and potential impact of experience. Diversity of participants,
field of study and country selection is also considered. Preference is given to students
who have not previously studied abroad.
Sanders will receive a $5,000 scholarship to participate in the Capstone International
Programs study abroad term at the American University in Cairo from Jan. 20-June 4,
2005.
Sanders is a junior at UA with a double major in political science and economics,
and a minor in Italian. She will be continuing her study of language as well as studying
Middle Eastern political science and economics during her time abroad.
At the University, Sanders is a presidential scholar, a Blackburn Institute student
fellow, co-chair of the SGA’s voter registration and education committee, and
the Impact campus coordinator.
