TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth
Bader Ginsburg will present the Albritton Lecture at The University
of Alabama School of Law on Monday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m.
Ginsburg will speak in the Law School’s lecture hall, room
187-188 of the Law Center.
Nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton,
Ginsburg has served on the court since 1993. She earned her bachelor’s
degree in government from Cornell University. She attended Harvard
Law School for two years and received her law degree from Columbia
University Law School in 1959. She served on the editorial boards
of both the Harvard Law Review and the Columbia Law Review. Ginsburg
was a member of the law faculties of Rutgers University from 1963-72
and Columbia University from 1972-80. She served on the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1980-93. Ginsburg
has published widely in the areas of civil procedure, conflict of
laws, constitutional law, and comparative law. In 1999, she received
the American Bar Association's Thurgood Marshall Award for her significant
contributions to the advancement of gender equality and civil rights.
She was founder and counsel for the Women’s Rights Project
of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Ginsburg will be the fifth U.S. Supreme Court Justice to deliver
the Albritton Lecture at the UA School of Law. The Albritton Lecture
Series is underwritten by the Albritton Fund, established as part
of the Law School Foundation in 1973. The fund commemorates the
contributions to the legal profession of five generations of the
Albritton family of Andalusia. Previous Albritton lecturers were
U.S. Supreme Court Justices William Rehnquist, Anthony Kennedy,
Antonin Scalia and Sandra Day O’Connor. The sixth Albritton
Lecture already is planned for the spring of 2005, when Justice
Clarence Thomas will visit Alabama.
