TUSCALOOSA,
Ala. – Water skiing, pool parties and playing golf are activities many teenagers
enjoy during the summer. This year, a University of Alabama summer sports camp is
making those activities possible for a group of Alabama youth who may be in wheelchairs
or have a disability.
The University of Alabama Disability Sports program is hosting an inclusive summer
sports camp July 5-9 for youth with ambulatory disabilities. Some 30 youngsters, age
12-18, from across the state will be attending the coed camp, says Margaret Stran,
camp director and UA graduate student, who also coaches the UA Women’s Wheelchair
Basketball Team.
Dr. Brent Hardin, assistant professor of kinesiology, and director of UADS, says
the campers will live in the UA dorms and will participate in activities that include
wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, swimming, dance, softball, floor hockey,
water skiing and golf.
The camp has been designed by the UADS program. Camp instructors and counselors
will be students, staff and faculty members from UA and members of the Lakeshore Foundation.
The camp is co-sponsored by the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities,
the Lakeshore Foundation and BlazeSports Clubs of America.
