TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Alabama department
of theatre and dance and the UA School of Music
are proud to present the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre and the University Singers
in “EQUINOX: A Concert of Song and Dance,” Friday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m.
in the Moody Concert Hall.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and University faculty and staff, and
$8 for students and children, and may be purchased by calling the UA Theatre &
Dance box office at 205/348-3400 or the UA School of Music box office at 205/348-7111.
With a wide array of music and eclectic styles of dance, EQUINOX is sure to inspire
everyone who experiences it. From the traditional, to the secular, to the American
folk culture, EQUINOX tells many stories through its harmonies and movement, with original
choreography by Edie Barnes (director of dance), Rita Snyder (assistant professor of
dance), Hilary Hodgens-Howard (guest choreographer), and Cornelius Carter (artistic
director, ARDT).
Barnes’ diverse background includes training and performance with the San Francisco
Ballet, the Washington Ballet and the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance in
New York City. Her choreography has been presented nationally and internationally
with her work being featured on NBC’s Today Show and CNN.
Carter was awarded the National Outstanding Doctoral and Research Universities Professor
of the Year award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in Washington in 2001. Carter was also awarded
the 2001-2002 Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award by the UA Alumni Association.
The University Singers are lead by Dr. Gregory Gentry, director of choral activities
at the University where he conducts Alabama Women's Chorale, University Singers, teaches
courses in undergraduate and graduate choral conducting, graduate choral literature,
and supervises all MM and DMA choral conducting candidates. Engagements as a conductor,
clinician and adjudicator have included appearances in Georgia, Illinois, Montana,
North Dakota, and with Alabama All-State Choir. In addition, Gentry has several performance
editions of early choral music forthcoming with National Music Publishers.
“EQUINOX: A Concert of Song and Dance” is an invocation of spring. This
is the only chance to experience the magic of two masterful companies joining together
to present a singular work of inspiration.
