TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The final results for the 2004 Beat Auburn Beat Hunger canned
food drive are in, and the real winners are needy people who benefit from the competition
between The University of Alabama and Auburn University.
The 2004 total results showed UA collecting 67,708 pounds of food and Auburn collecting
104,088 pounds of food. “Thanks to all students, faculty, and staff for their support.
Although, we did not win the competition, we are able to feed people throughout the
West Alabama community,” said Shana Foster of the UA Office of Community and Volunteer
Services, sponsor of the event on campus.
Food collected goes to stock the shelves of the West Alabama Food Bank, a nonprofit
organization that is the main supplier for churches, missions and food kitchens in
nine West Alabama counties, some of which rank as the poorest counties in the country.
UA student organization winners included:
- 1st Place-Student Government Association, 12,673 pounds
- 2nd Place-Residential Hall Association, 6,307 pounds
- 3rd Place-Athletic Department, 4,686 pounds
Greek Division winners included:
- Theta Chi Fraternity-3,283 pounds

In an effort to boost student, staff and faculty involvement in the canned food drive,

College of Communication & Information Sciences, Dr. Culpepper Clark, agreed to
a friendly inter-college pound per student competition.

total of 1,606 pounds; the total pounds per student for C&IS was 1.07 for a total
of 1,810 pounds. Both colleges increased their donations from last year’s totals;
they collected a total of 3,416 pounds of canned goods.
