TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Students at The University of Alabama will be able to participate
in several events on campus designed to encourage them to participate in the presidential
election in November.
The Office of Residential Life will “Rock the Vote” on Tuesday, Sept.
14 from 7-11 p.m. as part of its Roll Tide Tuesday program. Students are invited to
Bryce Lawn Apartments on campus for an evening of live music and entertainment. Students
will be encouraged to vote at the event, and staff will be on hand to help students
register to vote.
“Rock the Vote” will feature a mix of alternative rock, rap, hip-hop
and grunge music with performances from Offkilter, Abstract Chemistry and Shade Tree.
All students are encouraged to attend the event, which will be held near the north
entrance of the apartment complex near the corner of Bryce Drive and Campus Drive.
In addition to the “Rock the Vote” event, the UA Student Government
Association (SGA) has also scheduled events which will help students participate in
the voting process. Through the Bama Blast summer orientation sessions and the Welcome
Back events, the SGA has already registered more than 250 students to vote.
Voter registration stations will be set up around the UA Quad and Bryant-Denny Stadium
before home football games leading up to the election. Stations will also be set up
at every major university event this fall.
The SGA also plans to hold at least two all-day voter registration drives at academic
buildings around campus, as well as hosting high profile national and regional speakers
during Voter Registration and Education Week.
Brinkley Serkedakis, SGA Vice President of External Affairs, and SGA President Hal
Mooty filmed a commercial urging students to be responsible voters. It will air on
television broadcasts and on the stadium Jumbotron prior to football games.
Serkedakis views the voting process not only as a privilege but as a responsibility
and obligation to members of the UA community.
“As college students, and more importantly, as members of a democracy, it
is our right and responsibility not only to register and go to the polls, but to cast
an informed ballot that reflects careful consideration of important issues and the
candidate’s respective platforms,” she said. “The SGA is not setting
a target number of students to register, but instead we are maintaining the mindset
that we aim to register every student to vote.”
