TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at The
University of Alabama will celebrate 2005 with the exhibition opening “Cris
Gianakos and William Hall: A Twenty Year Collaboration,” on
Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in 103 Garland Hall.
Gianakos and Hall will conduct a gallery talk Jan. 7 at 2 p.m.
for interested members of the community. The exhibition will show
through Feb. 13.
Gianakos has been a working New York sculptor for the past 25
years. His desire to translate aspects of his sculpture into two
dimensions resulted in an ongoing working relationship with UA
alumnus Bill Hall, the Master Printer at PACE Prints, New York.
This exhibition highlights their collaborative effort in more than
30 works produced over the last 20 years.
The exhibition emphasizes Gianakos’ preoccupation with the
exchange between interior and exterior spaces. His dark, solid
geometric silhouettes capture two-dimensionally the beauty of his
ramps, which have a planer front or face. He arrived at several
of his images while observing his sculptures at twilight.
Gianakos’ career awards include grants from the Pollack-Krasner
Foundation, the Adolph and Esther Gottleib Foundation, and the
National Endowment for the Arts. His work can be seen in the collections
of the Museum of Modern Art; Smithsonian Institution, Washington,
D.C.; National Gallery, Athens, Greece; and Wakita Museum of Art,
Tokyo, Japan.
Funding support for the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art comes from
the department of art and the College of Arts & Sciences at
UA. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 2 p.m. to
5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, please contact the gallery
