TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Bruce S. Jansson, professor of social
policy at the University of Southern California and noted historian
of the U.S. federal budget process, will present "From Boomers
to Bust? Some Implications of Boomers' Rising Costs for American
Society in Coming Decades," Monday, March 14 at noon in 104
Little Hall on The University of Alabama campus.
The lecture is part of the UA School
of Social Work’s Colloquium Series that brings speakers
to campus to share their expertise with UA faculty, staff, students
and welcome guests. The lecture is free and open to the University
community and the general public.
Jansson’s recently published book, “The Sixteen Trillion
Dollar Mistake: How the U.S. Bungled its National Priorities from
FDR to Clinton,” looks at the history of the federal budget
process. He is currently working on a sequel to the book that will
call for a debate on forthcoming national priorities as spending
on the elderly and medical care threatens to truncate spending
for other domestic priorities.
His other books, “The Reluctant Welfare State, Theory and
Practice of Social Policy” and “Becoming an Effective
Policy Advocate from Policy Practice to Social Justice” have
been printed in fourth editions.
Jansson has been on the USC faculty since 1973, after working
as a community organizer and planner for tenants' rights in the
state of Michigan. He has also served as the Moses Distinguished
Research Professor at the City University of New York Graduate
Center.
His research projects include policy making and planning processes
in social agencies; the procurement of resources for social service
agencies; the monitoring function of public agencies; and the history
and practice of social welfare policy.
