TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. John Howard will read excerpts from
his book, “The Same Language” by Ben Duncan, Thursday,
Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at The University of Alabama W.
S. Hoole Special Collections Library on the second floor of
Mary Harmon Bryant Hall. The reading is part of the Rose Gladney
Lecture on Justice and Social Change.
The book, which is edited and has an afterword by Howard, is a
memoir of Duncan, through his life as an orphan in Depression-era
Alabama to a Henry Fellowship to study at the University of Oxford.
The book was first published in London in 1962 and received great
acclaim. This edition, published by the UA Press, focuses on the
struggles of being homosexual in both the United States and in
England and includes new chapters and commentaries he could not
write in the 1960s.
Howard is a 20th-century U.S. social and cultural historian and
teaches at King’s College, University of London in the United
Kingdom. He received his master’s degree in American studies
from UA and his doctorate from Emory College. Howard is the author
of “Men Like That: A Southern Queer History.”
The lecture is named for Dr. Rose Gladney, who retired in 2003
as UA associate professor of American studies. Gladney spent her
career working on issues of social justice and change. She was
one of the early professors in the UA’s women’s
studies department and helped craft the master’s program
in that field. She also helped develop and sustain the African-American
studies minor.
A reception and book signing will follow the discussion. The event,
sponsored by University Libraries, New
College and the departments of American
studies and women studies, is free and open to the public.
