TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Association of American Publishers
has presented “Rivers of North America,” co-edited
by University of Alabama ecologist Dr. Arthur Benke, an Award for
Excellence.
The Association’s Professional and Scholarly Publishing
Division lauded the winners earlier this month as the “best
of the best for 2005.” Selected by a nine-member panel consisting
of librarians, academics and working publishers as the winner in
the category of Geology and Geography, “Rivers of North America” is
published by Elsevier/Academic Press.
The book, a 1,168 page comprehensive guide detailing 218 of the
continent’s rivers, is co-edited by Dr. Colbert Cushing,
a retired river ecologist, with a foreword by Robert F. Kennedy
Jr., president of Waterkeeper Alliance. River basin maps, combined
with almost 200 breathtaking photographs, demonstrate the diversity,
beauty and power of each river system.
University of Alabama faculty Drs. Milton Ward, Phillip Harris,
Amelia Ward and Alexander Huryn are among the co-authors of the
book’s individual chapters.
