UA Dance Students to Perform at Area Schools

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Students from The University of Alabama Creative Campus and dance programs who have been volunteering their time and talents at area schools will perform for their students on Wednesday, April 25 with shows at Arcadia Elementary School at 9:10 a.m. and at Oakdale Primary School at 1 and 1:40 p.m.

The UA volunteers teach dance lessons during physical education classes in Arcadia Elementary 2nd grade and Oakdale Primary 4th fourth grade. These schools are the first schools to participate in this program, sponsored by the UA Creative Campus Initiative. This program is a pilot for future collaborations with UA dance students and the Tuscaloosa City Schools.

The classes began on March 19 and will end April 25 with the performances.

“We are hoping that one day the city schools will incorporate dance education as a routine part of physical education,” said Bethany Collins, Creative Campus intern.

In addition to creating an original dance, the students attended a performance of Dance Alabama to see a full dance recital and gain inspiration for their own performances.

The Creative Campus, Creative Community Initiative of UA is an unprecedented student group that will focus on broadening the scope and deepening the experience of the arts and cultural opportunities on the UA campus and in the Tuscaloosa community. Five student-led departments have been established to accomplish this mission: Creative Campus, Creative Community, Creative Education, Creative Economy, and Creative Leadership. Under the auspices of UA's Office of Academic Affairs, Creative Campus seeks to build synergy though collaboration.

The University of Alabama, a student-centered research university, is in the midst of a planned, steady enrollment growth with a goal of reaching 28,000 students by 2010. This growth, which is positively impacting the campus and the state's economy, is in keeping with UA's vision to be the university of choice for the best and brightest students. UA, the state's flagship university, is an academic community united in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Alabamians.
