…Lisa Scherff, assistant professor of English Education at the University of Alabama said it is mixed-message decisions like the one made by the Tuscaloosa County Board that make it more difficult for teachers to know what is acceptable to use in the classroom. "There are a lot of issues young adults should read about, and teachers - especially now - need guidance," Scherff said. "What concerns me is the language in the statement, because it is still not clear as to [the board's] action." Scherff is in the process of writing a book addressing the subject, called "But Can I Teach; Young Adult Literacy in the Secondary Classroom."
