In an effort to revitalize the Jewish student community, the University of Alabama is making room for a new synagogue and Jewish student center on campus. The 'God Quad' —- the unofficial name for the area on the eastern side of campus where the Lutheran, Episcopal, Roman Catholic and Baptist student centers are located — could include two new buildings for Jewish students if the UA board of trustees approves long-term lease agreements today for Temple Emanu-El and the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation…UA, with help from the larger Jewish communities in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, has been actively recruiting Jewish students to campus for a little over a year…
Singleton: C&IS is growing, raising funds

Dean Loy Singleton summed up the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences in one word - growth. Singleton gave the annual C&IS State of the College address from the steps of Reese Phifer Hall Thursday at 4 p.m….Singleton said the continuous growth at the University, currently 25,000 students strong, has had an impact on C&IS, so the college has seen changes along with the University, he said. He said a record number of 2,500 students are a part of the college this year…
UA Helps Raise Money for Childhood Cancer Patients

How can some old bones raise money to help children battling cancer? A fossil hunt for the cure, of course. Recently this even raised thousands of dollars for cancer research and patient help at Children’s Hospital. Vulcan Materials, the Paleontological Association of Alabama, the University of Alabama and ABC 33/40 helped host the day.
UA Engineer Says ALDOT Does Good Job of Inspecting Bridges

UA engineer Jim Richardson: “There are other professors and firms doing research on how to improve the inspection process, to improve the decision process. Should we rehab it or let it wear out? Certainly our bridges are getting older, and nobody really knows how long they’ll last. I’ve accompanied the ALDOT engineers when they look at bridges, and I think they make good decisions . . .”
Gasoline a relative bargain in Alabama, survey shows

Christmas parade marshals chosen with nod to UA traditions

Building on this year’s theme, Christmas Traditions, the grand marshals selection committee for the 2007 West Alabama Christmas Parade chose two men that they believe embody those in this city.
