UA President Robert Witt made his fall address at the faculty and staff meeting Wednesday, announcing enrollment growth, faculty and staff raises, campus construction updates and other goals the University is working toward…consider another expansion to Bryant-Denny Stadium. "I'm anticipating that by early spring, we will begin the process of giving serious consideration to again expanding our football stadium by closing in the other end of the stadium," Witt said…

It is too soon to say whether the national AlcoholEdu program the University of Alabama began participating in last year will do any good in curbing excess and binge drinking at the Capstone. But it is encouraging that this year more than 90 percent of incoming freshmen took the online course, putting UA in the top four in terms of percentage of participation of the more than 200 colleges in the nation participating in the program…

University of Alabama president Robert Witt sounded an encouraging tone in his fall address to the faculty and staff. And why not? These are good times at UA…Enrollment is hitting records with each incoming class…At the same time, UA is attracting high-achieving students…The student body is more diverse…Faculty salaries are up, and are competitive with other similar institutions nationwide…The $500 million capital fund drive already has raised $422 million, with two years still to go…If you have been through campus lately, you have seen all the construction going on. All of this has been a huge economic engine for the surrounding community…Witt has challenged all of us to make a personal commitment to helping UA improve. It is the intangible aspects of a university that make it special, a sense of pride and excellence.

Students could study in Cuba

…The Capstone has teamed with the University of Havana in Cuba to offer a semester-long study abroad program for the first time during the spring semester. Carmen Taylor, associate dean of arts and sciences and coordinator for the program, said though this is the first semester an official study abroad program in Havana is available, the Alabama-Cuba Initiative began in 2001, when UA faculty conducted research in Cuba…

Alabama-Tennessee will be SEC early game
