Research team uses state grant to study blind crayfish

UA researchers are in the process of disproving a nearly 40-year-old theory about blind crayfish. With the aid of an Alabama wildlife grant, members of the UA biology department are currently studying the life span of blind crayfish in Alabama caves. A theory that originated in the early 1970s suggests cave organisms, specifically blind crayfish, can live for more than 100 years, said Bernie Kuhajda from the biology department…

Engineering student receives highest honor from TMS society

Nicholas De Leon, a junior majoring in metallurgical engineering, was awarded the J. Keith Brimacombe Presidential Scholarship by The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. Ramana Reddy, professor and department head of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering said the scholarship is important because it is an international competition. "This is a scholarship given once a year by The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, given to one exceptional student," he said. "It is an international competition and one student in the whole world receives this."…

UA doctoral student faces cancer

Josh Wimberly is like a lot of students at the University. He's a third-year doctoral student studying social work…That Monday, surrounded by his family; he learned that he had colorectal cancer. A benefit concert was held for Wimberly at Little Willie's in downtown Tuscaloosa Thursday to with all proceeds going toward the payment of expenses for his treatment. The idea for a concert came from Allan Kaufman, a social work professor…
