Experts urge planning early for retirement

Jan Brakefield, an assist¬ant professor who teaches financial planning at the University of Alabama, cites number after number to show that workers may be headed for post-retirement shock…According to Brakefield, the U.S. savings rate reached its lowest point since 1929 recently, and Americans spend about $102 for every $100 they earn, she said…Brakefield often uses these numbers on her stu¬dents to impress upon them the importance of starting early…

Some churches use violent video games as tool for ministry

…'The churches are just trying to figure out how do we keep our young people, and that's a perennial question,' said Ted Trost, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Alabama. Trost added that bringing gaming to church is somewhat akin to churches hosting sock hops in the 1950s.'Churches are always trying to do this,' he said. 'I guess the best example is Contemporary Christian worship. ... On one hand you have the idea that rock and roll, especially in regard to rhythms, is sinful and of the devil. But eventually the churches realized that some people who are into rock and roll aren't that bad. Then you have drums and guitars and electric keyboards in worship.'…

Barnes & Noble optimistic about first Tuscaloosa store

…While Books-A-Million is already a well-known presence, the novelty of Barnes & Noble will generate interest, said Kristy Reynolds, the Bruno associate professor of marketing at the University of Alabama. “Barnes & Noble is well-known. People know the name; they may have gone already to the store in Birmingham,” she said. “I think it will be a destination place.”…

UA’s Homecoming Committee contacted Bart Starr about help in distributing money raised during UA’s Homecoming Week. Starr knew the money had to go to Cornerstone school. The money will provide scholarships to students.

Phi Delta Theta Fraternity will host its fourth annual Chili Cook Off to benefit the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association at 4 p.m. Thursday at the fraternity house on University Boulevard – The 14th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Fight continues until Nov. 15.
