UA hosts Hungarian speakers concerned with social welfare

Three members from the University of Debrecen in Hungary spoke to students and faculty at the Capstone on Monday to emphasize social welfare and mental aging in Hungary. Before the lecture, Ellen Csikai, a professor of social work who is helping host the Hungarian visitors, and the group visited Bryce Mental Institution and other healthcare agencies in the area. Csikai said she will travel to Hungary to teach at Debrecen in the spring. She has combined her Hungarian background and her research about the elderly and life care…

Tide Text Alerts among University's emergency notification plans

…UA spokeswoman Debbie Lane said there are many ways students can be alerted of emergencies, including the new Tide Text Alerts program. The alerts are fast and easy to send, Lane said, but these messages are sent only in extreme situations in order to grasp the attention of students. "Because we don't take sending messages to students lightly, we hope that students won't take it lightly either," Lane said. Students perform music in Ridgecrest West elevator

Jesus Mares, a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering, and Robert Sharpe, a freshman majoring in chemistry, are bringing new meaning to the term "elevator music." That's because as of Sunday night, they have a definite schedule to play live music in the Ridgecrest West elevator…Their next musical elevator performance will be Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. Their schedule will be reposted next week.

Lakeside feeds growing student population

…Bama Dining officials said they have made significant changes to better serve the students and faculty who choose to eat on campus. Lakeside Dining Facility has helped to eliminate the issue of overcrowding at other locations. Greta Davis, marketing manager for Bama Dining, said Lakeside serves approximately 2,400 students a day, in comparison to the 1,000 students being served at Fresh Food Company…

UA's Creative Campus carries out goal of Culture Builds!

…Hank Lazer, associate provost for Academic Affairs, said he is hopeful about the potential of the Culture Builds! program. "We do have a rich cultural area, but have not made a cultural identity coherent," Lazer said. "We want to find ways to strengthen our cultural programs to make our community a more desirable community"…College of Commerce and Business Administration spokesman Bill Gerdes said the graduate business school will start a program to promote attending cultural events. Homegrown Alabama to bring farmers market to Ferguson Plaza today
