UA teams sweep enterprise contest
Tuscaloosa News – April 15
University of Alabama-affiliated teams swept the second Alabama Launchpad finals Monday, winning first, second and third place — not to mention nearly $200,000 — in the competition, which is meant to fuel the development of high growth, technology-driven companies in Alabama…A team of UA engineers and students representing Lambert Technologies LLC received $100,000 in start-up money for their work in developing and marketing a luminescent epoxy coating used for testing material stress levels. The product will have applications in the automotive, aerospace and energy industries, said Lambert CEO Todd Gross…The team consisted of research engineer Scott Spear, MBA student Chris Cater and chemistry graduate student Samantha Mroczynski, all of UA…Second place and $50,000 was awarded Cellulosix, for its cellulose based drug delivery technology. Third place and $25,000 went to SEA Desalination for its solar powered desalination technology aimed at dwellers in coastal areas. Eight teams, five from UA, competed in Monday's finals. Other finalists came from the University of Alabama at Huntsville, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Alabama A&M…

Five University of Alabama wheelchair basketball players have been chosen to participate in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. Three players were named to the U.S. Paralympic Women’s Wheelchair Basketball National Team, one was chosen for the U.S. men’s team and another was named to Canada’s women’s wheelchair team…

Shurett to lead UA Alumni Association

Former Times-Journal Publisher Ben Shurett is the new president-elect of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association. A 1974 Alabama graduate and Tuscaloosa native, he was chosen as president-elect this weekend as part of the A-Day festivities in Tuscaloosa. Shurett will serve one year as president-elect. Wilbur W. “Bubba” Masters, city president of Regions Bank in Gadsden, became president over the weekend.
